Getting Married in New York City

The Marriage License, By Normal Rockwell

How To Get Your Wedding License

If you are getting married in New York City you can obtain your marriage license in any of the city clerk's borough offices. You do not need an appointment, but both bride and groom must appear together to get the license.

Some thing you need to know about obtaining your liscense:

* The license is valid throughout the state. For example, you can get your license in Manhattan and get married in Queens -- or in Albany for that matter.

* The license is prepared while you are in the clerks office, but there is a TWENTY FOUR HOUR WAITING PERIOD before you can marry. So be sure to include that timing in your plans if your are coming in from out of town to be wed. The license remains valid for 60 Days.

* The fee is $30.00 , and only money orders are accepted. Make M.O. payable to City Clerk.

* You must have identification that prooves your age. Acceptable ID can include: birth certificate, baptismal certificate, passport, driver's license, green card, military identification.

* If divorced you must provide the month, day and year your marriage(s) ended and who the deffendant was. In the Manhattan clerks office it is "suggested" you bring the divorce papers with you; in other parts of New York it is mandatory.

* Blood tests and medical exams no longer required in NY.

You can obtain your license in the following clerks office. They are generally open between 9 am and 4 pm Monday through Friday, and some offices take a break for lunch at 11:30 until 1 pm. Please call first.
